Mike A. Hickman is a 1975 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, having received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, Magna Cum Laude with high honors. As an undergraduate he was inducted into the academic society of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence at the University of Tennessee, George C. Taylor School of Law in March 1978, and was admitted to practice in all Tennessee courts and the Federal Court system. He has trial experience in Federal, State, Bankruptcy, Social Security, and City Courts. He regularly practices before the State Courts of Blount County and all surrounding counties, including Knox, Sevier, Loudon, Monroe, McMinn, Roane, and Anderson. He has appeared in the United States Federal District Court for the State of Georgia in Macon, Georgia, and the United States Federal District Court for the State of South Carolina in Florence, South Carolina, as well as the United States Federal Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee in Knoxville. He is a member of the Blount County Bar Association and a past president. Mr. Hickman’s legal career began in private practice upon graduation from law school at the age of twenty-three in April 1978. He is a general practitioner practicing in the areas of Wills and Estates, Real Estate, Criminal, and General Civil, including all areas of domestic relations including divorce and pre and post-divorce matters.
Over the last thirty-eight years, his law practice evolved into one of primarily litigating divorce and family law matters. His current primary area of practice is divorce and family law with an emphasis on complex and simple divorce cases involving property division and alimony awards. Mr. Hickman has tried numerous types of cases before both Judges and juries, including criminal defense work, felonies and misdemeanors, personal injury, child custody and support cases, juvenile and probate matters, as well as representing several Knox and Maryville business owners in complex divorce litigation. For thirty-eight years, Mr. Hickman has served as a general practitioner in Blount County, has handled cases ranging from first degree capital murder to simple uncontested divorces.
Mr. Hickman was born in Maryville, Tennessee, and resided there for his entire life. He was educated in the Maryville School system. He and his wife of 33 years, have a daughter and son who graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Mr. Hickman has a strong work ethic and has practiced full time his entire legal career and worked at some productive endeavor since he was ten years old. He receives referrals from many other area attorneys to assist their clients in complex divorce and post-divorce matters, and has mentored numerous young attorneys throughout his career. His Father was a laborer for thirty-five years at the Aluminum Company of America while his Mother worked in security at a local department store. He is extremely sensitive to the cost of access to the justice system for those in like circumstances, and has performed hundreds of hours pro bono for indigent clients, both criminally and civilly. He receives a great deal of satisfaction in volunteering for the representation of the indigent in conjunction with the Legal Aid Society of East Tennessee. He was a board member for two years for Legal Aid of East Tennessee and has a deep sense of moral obligation to provide equal access for justice to the indigent.
